Will you be mountaineering, backpacking in extreme weather, backpacking in typical weather, backpacking solo, canoe/kayak camping, bicycle touring, family camping, backyard camping? You will also save money over time if you are going to be using them regularly. Of course, if you get lucky and find the perfect tent for you early on you can just go out and buy one straight away.

Renting is also clearly the best option if you are only going to need the tent a handful of times. If you are running a special event, it will definitely not be worth your while to buy tents for the occasion, and there are serious disadvantages in doing so. Firstly, you will need to erect the tent yourself, and if you have no experience of this you may find it is not as easy as you think. The worst scenario is where you make a mistake erecting the tent and do not notice it until after the event has started.
